The charming Ashtabula plantation in Pendleton, South Carolina was the location for the Sunday School picnic scenes at the opening of Milltown Pride. The house was built around 1825 and has been owned by some notable families, including the Pelzer family who founded the town of Pelzer, South Carolina. The opening scene, filmed at this location, was full of watermelon, flowers, laughing children, and dapper gentlemen. Countless glasses of lemonade were served and then returned, bees were swatted and then swatted again, peaches were delivered and redelivered, and stories were told and then retold. Not long into the day, a cheer went up when the director pointed to the clapboard that showed that scene #1000 had been reached! That number reflected a lot of time, film, waiting, and effort.
The outdoor scenes were shot in the front yard. The “culture” scenes were shot in a room inside the house.
The main actors were also in some scenes at this location without the extras.
